Nail Fungus Symptoms :

- Nail fungus begins as a small separation between the end of the toe and the nail bed.

- Nail fungus can look like white spots or streaks in the nail.

- Usually the nail fungus will start at the tip of the nail and
progress to cover the
complete nail over a
period of time.

- The nail may thicken as the fungus  continues to grow. The
filaments of fungus
take up space and
cause the nail to swell.

- The nail becomes
discolored, yellow, white, brown, or
green to black.

- Brittle nails with shedding and
crumbling edges

- An accumulation of the kerationous debris
is usually beneath the nail.

There can be pain, not from the fungus but due to the constant pressure of the thickened nail against the soft tissue.  This can also result in an infection.

NAIL FUNGUS FACTS

Onychomycosis, the medical term for nail fungus, is a living organism that thrives in dark, damp environments such as under and around nails. Fungal infections are very common on both fingernails and toenails. Toenails are more likely to be affected by fungus since it is attracted to a dark and damp environment which is more common on the foot than on the hand.

Up to 50% of people over the age of 50 have a nail fungus infection to some degree. Approximately 10% of worldwide population suffers from some sort of nail fungus.

The fungi that cause onychomycosis are related to those that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, and other common fungal infections. These fungi can also be confused with other conditions, such as psoriasis of the nails, nail ridges, and sometimes bacterial infections.

Toe nail fungus is unsightly, disfiguring, embarrassing and can be painful. Nail fungus is not related to poor hygiene. It’s just a fact that our nails are located in a dark, warm, moist place where fungus can thrive - our socks and shoes.

WHAT ABOUT FUNGUS IN GENERAL..
WHAT IS FUNGUS EXACTLY?

DID YOU KNOW...

Your body can become
CAUSES OF NAIL FUNGUS

Trauma to the nail also makes the nail more likely to acquire a nail fungus.

Decreased immunity in general, such as being weakened by sickness can cause the start of nail fungus.

Public areas  such as spa, locker-rooms, etc. where there are warm puddles of water where the athlete’s foot and nail fungi can live, waiting for someone to pick up the spores. Toe nail fungus thrives in warm moist dark places. The nail itself acts as a protective covering for the fungus to thrive underneath.

It isn’t aging that causes toe nail fungus although there are a high percentage of older people inflected with a nail fungus. Over a life time there are more opportunities to acquire a fungal nail infection.

For people with diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system, nail fungus can present serious risks.
Fungus nails must be aggressively dealt with or they can spread to all of your toe nails. The longer the infection is allowed to go unchecked, the more difficult it is to treat, and the more complications you have from it.

This disease is commonly misunderstood and left untreated for various reasons. nail fungus, in particular, is notoriously difficult to treat.

Nail fungus is usually a chronic condition that progresses to involve more of the nail and other toes. Even if you lose the affected nail,  the nail that grows back is usually also still affected by the fungus.

There are some internal medications available by prescription that help fight nailfungus, but they can have severe side effects such as upset stomach, headaches and liver damages.  Also mixing these drugs with other medications can be extremely dangerous.

Not to mention the cost.  Some of the nail fungus prescription medications can cost well over $1000 by the time treatment is complete.  Studies show that there is only 35-50% complete cure rate after 72 weeks of using these prescription medications as a nail fungus cure.

Topical medications are helpful in treating early small infections. They just aren’t capable of penetrating the nail to reach all of the fungi, so most prove unsatisfactory as a nail fungus cure.. Because ZetaClear  attacks the fungus both internally and externally is why it is the most successful nail fungus cure offered today. The homeopathic spray under the tongue attacks the nailfungus internally and the topical application attacks the nailfungus externally.

Surgery is also a treatment option as a nail fungus cure. The procedure is not difficult but the removal of the nail is permanent. When the nail grows back, it has a good chance of still having a fungus, if it grows back. This is a last resort and unnecessary.

Donald- I do believe my wife is on to something with this toenail fungus cure. I had toenail fungus for years and using Zetaclear has completely cleared up my toes.  I never tried the prescription drugs to cure it, I've heard so much negative about them, that they can cause liver damage, etc. You can't believe something so natural and organic works so well.  Why doesn't the whole country know about it?
Hopefully they will !

Nail Fungus Cures and Answers from Blogs and Forums

My Husband had a terrible toe nail fungus problem on two of his toenails. He never sought medical attention, because he figured they'd just prescribe something like Lamasil, which is hard on the liver. Doing a search on the internet, I found a natural cure - Zetaclear! Inexpensive, natural, and - guess what - it WORKS!
You just need to use the Zetaclear daily. DO NOT miss a single day, though! A healthy nail will grow out. But if you don't keep using it, the fungus can spread to the new nail. So you need to keep treating, until the entire fungus-affected nail has totally grown out.
My husband noticed that a new, healthy nail was indeed growing out. He's been diligent with applying, and the nail fungus is now almost entirely gone and grown out. Amazing. This has been an awful problem for him - and he's grateful to have found such an inexpensive, natural, and effective cure. Hope this might help someone out there with a similar problem. (Just remember to keep applying every day.)

I have suffered from onychomycosis (nail fungus)  in my finger nails. I to have tried many solutions including Lamosil, Vick's Vapor Rub, and Vinegar, and agree that many solutions don't work for everyone. I came across another solution, called Zetaclear that has cured my naifungus problem.  The nail fungus was killed and the nails grew back. I have since been researching the reasons I grew the nailfungus in the first place and am looking at treatments to rid my body of this fungus.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Recently I came across an alternative therapist. He advised me to use two drops of paraffin wax with kerosene on the affected toenail and continue to use it for a few weeks to get rid of the nail fungus. It seems to be working.
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I developed a whitish discoloration in my big toenails after working on a dive boat for four years. I'm sure this was caused by not drying my feet properly between dives and wearing bootees with my fins. This was a HUGE source of embarrassment for me, might not sound like much but all the other female divers have beautifully pedicured nails when they come to dive for the day and I had these nasty looking feet, so I compounded the problem by hiding them in my bootees....

Anyway, I tried Sporanox, Lamasil, vinegar, chlorine, cutting down the nail to painful extremes, nothing made any difference at all. I tried Vicks Vaporub and that seemed to work a little bit but didn't really cure it. Someone told me about a natural product called Fungisil. After using it for several weeks the nasty discoloration started fading. I'm still waiting to see how the nails grow back (I had cut them down drastically) but they are all healthy and pink and clear at the moment.

Someone please help! I have two badly infected toes on one foot (a problem of several years) and two more are growing in with nailfungus. I know there is a prescription medication I can take for this, but I have the impression that it could take a year to work and that it could cause liver damage. At any rate, my baby is due in 3 weeks and I wouldn't want to take it until I have finished breastfeeding, which could be quite a while. Has anyone found a successfull nail fungus cure, whether it's medication or alternative therapy? I am so tired of covering up the fungus with polish (not a polish kind of person) and you can imagine how hard it's been to reach my toes lately! Signed, I hate my toenails
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My brother has had onychomycosis for years. All the remedies listed he has tried without success. Right now he's been using Zetaclear for the past 8 months. He lost his toenail (which is good.) And now its growing back and it's looking much better. Anon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know two people who treated their toenail fungus by dropping hydrogen peroxide on it every day. It started working after a couple of months but then it seemed to come back. So they tried this other stuff called Zetaclear and after 6 months the nails look pretty good. What I've heard about the oral meds are that they are very expensive and that they may or may not be effective in the long term (the nail fungus tends to come back). The meds are expensive and bad for your liver and I'm pretty sure it would get into breast milk. In any case, if you do treat your toes successfully, you will need to replace all your shoes because they are contaminated with the fungus.

Me and my husband both have a nail fungus problem. We went to this podiatrist named Dr. Anna Sorkin. She promised if we'd follow her treatment, we'd see results. She was right. She trimmed the nails and filed them down and prescribed  athletes foot cream (prescription) and an over-the-counter treatment called Fungisil. We put it on all our toes and use the cream on our feet. She says the two organisms in athlete's foot and fungus are the same. We use Lysol with bleach to disinfect the tub/shower.
Within a month, nearly all my fungus was gone. After three months, I just have a wee bit on the two toes that were the worst. I thought I only had it on two toes, but it was really on all of them. If you start treating early before it's had a chance to really set in, it goes a way a lot faster. My husbands taking longer. I am so happy with my results. Have the baby and then use Fungisil.

I used to love getting pedicures but haven't put any polish on my nails since beginning treatment. Only go to places that confirms they disinfect.

Good luck with the baby and the fungus-be-gone! pretty pink toes

Nailfungus bothered me for many years. I tried just about every over the counter and holistic solution available. I did everything that you're supposed to do. I cleaned my feet every day, kept my nails trimmed, applied solutions everyday. Nothing really seemed to work for me.
I finally tried Lamisil. My doctor was more concerned about liver damage than I was --- I wanted the fungus dead and gone. I took the pills in three courses over several months with a liver test in between each course. I'm free and clear now.

The problem is that the Lamisil is expensive. I think $250 per course, with no generic available. With some insurance plans like mine, the copay doesn't apply, so I had to fork out the whole thing. And the doctors will tell you, there's no guarantee that it will work. If you decide to go for it, make sure you get the testing in between courses. Good luck! Toes of Death

At the Berkeley Farmer's Market there's this herbalist named Joshua Muskat who makes a topical toenail fungus cure. He sells it at the Saturday market and at his clinic in S.F. emi
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I've almost got my onychomycosis (toenail fungus) cured and I didn't take the prescription Lamisil tablets (which do have liver risks).
One of my toenails had detached and the doctor said that they don't pull the nail anymore, but just wait until it falls off on it's own. Mine didn't come off all of the way, so I used this stuff for nail fungus cure called Fungasil and I could really work it in under the nail

After a few months the nail started growing again and the new growth looked clear. It's taken a while, almost a year and a half, but the old, infected part is only 1/3 of the total nail. I am pregnant now and my nails are starting to grow fast, so I think I'll have a totally clear nail in a few more months. Anon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Regarding onychomycosis, I found a nail fungus cure that really works. It's called Zetaclear and it won't hurt your baby through your milk. It's an all natural herbal product. amy singam

There's a few home remedies that seem to have some success. But I think that in most cases the nail fungus has to be a mild case and you definitely have to be pretty good about keeping at it. One of the best nail fungus cure I've found is apple cider vinegar. I've had toenail fungus for years, and I just figured I could never get rid of it unless I got some kind of prescription from a doctor. I read a testimonial on the web about ACV, and so I decided to try it. I drank some, diluted in water, every day and about once a week I'd buff the top of the nail then apply a cotton pad soaked in AVC for about ten minutes. It started working. My dermatologist recommends Fungisil, and I apply that sometimes too. I've been at this for over a year and the nail fungus is almost gone. It just plain takes a lot of time for the nail to grow out.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I saw this nail fungus cure and tried it myself. Soak your infected nails in ordinary mint-flavored mouth wash (e.g Scope) every day. It will take awhile, but you'll start noticing small results in several weeks. You have to stay after it, but it really works and does not involve any harsh chemicals. Been there

Ever since my childhood I've been a swimmer, even swimming laps through my pregnancy. This stopped with the birth of my son. I'd like to resume swimming laps again - I'm actually physically craving it. But in the interim, I've developed this terrible toe nail fungus. I'm very self-conscious about it, so, I don't want to show my toenails, I don't want to gross out other people, and I don't want to infect anyone. Is there a solution to swimming at a public pool with toenail fungus?  Craving to Swim Again
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The chlorine in pools will kill the multitude of microbes that inhabit everyone's bodies, not just yours. You are not the only one with onychomycosis. To keep from sharing your toenail fungus with others, wear flip-flops in the dressing room, shower, and right up to the pool, but don't let it stop you from jumping in and doing what you enjoy!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
My brother has horrible toenail fungus and happily swims laps in the pool at the gym without a care. The chlorine will take care of everything. not thinking about toes . . .

Fast Fix For A Nail Fungus Cure?
Help! We're going to the Islands in June and 7 of my toenails have nail fungus. I am so embarrassed. I haven't pursued any medical remedies because I have been pregnant or breastfeeding for the past 4 years and I didn't want to use Lamisil. But once I stop breastfeeding, I'm considering taking it. It's supposed to be safer now that it's given in ''pulses'', and not day after day. If anyone has experience with the medication, I'd love to hear it. In the meantime, does anybody know of a short term solution for a nail fungus cure?  Love the Feet, Hate the Fungus
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
There's no fast fix for a nail fungus cure, but there are a few things to try. My dermatologist says Zetaclear is the best over the counter product. I've used it and it works pretty good but you have to keep using it for at least 6 months to make sure the nail fungus doesn't come back. anon.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vicks vaporub worked as a nail fungus cure for me. I put it on my bad toenail every night. It healed it! I thought I would be stuck with this nail fungus for life, but it is now gone. I think that it actually took almost a year to take hold. Really and truly, Vicks is a good nail fungus cure! anon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nail fungus - alternatives to Lamisil?
My doctor gave me  Lamisil for a nail fungus cure, but had a bad reaction to the medication and am looking for effective alternatives. (I've had toenail fungus for years, but it recently spread to my thumbnail, which is really hard to to ignore.) Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks! anon
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
A while back I had onychomycosis and my doctor put me on Lamisil. It was terrible because there were so many side effects. Worst drug I've ever been on. BUT I managed to stay on it until the fungus went away (it was prescribed for 6 months, but I managed to only take it for 3..that's how long it took for the nailfungus to disappear). I seem to be cured. I hope it doesn't come back. Best of luck to you! Been There
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Try Vick's Vaporub on your nail fungus. A pedicurist  told me about this remedy, and it worked for me. First you have to cut back as much of the nail as you can and really work the Vicks in. Every day. It took about 3 months for my nail fungus to go away. If the nail fungus comes back I'll just use the Vicks for a longer time. happy feet
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is something I swear really works as a nail fungus cure. Try taking flax seed oil pills and borage oil pills every day. They have lots of omega 3's, 6's and 9's - all good for nails and hair. I saw this on a  website for hair loss in men. It didn't help my husband's hair, but his toenail fungus (which he had for 8 years!!) started going away after being on the pills for a couple of months! He's going to stay on the pills for awhile but we think this is a really good nail fungus cure!:-) Healthy hair and Nails
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Nail fungus cure - If you have a onychomycosis, SPORONOX is the pill you take. My husband got rid of his nail fungus that way. However, we have HealthNet, so the Primary care physician referred him to a PODIATRIST (not a dermatologist), and that dr. gave him a prescription that insurance did cover. It wasn't too bad on his liver, and anyway I think that's only a problem IF YOU HAVE HEPATITIS or somthing like that. The liver can be monitored by occasional blood tests. Andrea

I've heard that soaking your feet twice a day in warm lapacha tea is a good nail fungus cure. The tea bags can be purchased at health food stores. sherri
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is a nail fungus cure that is working for me. Soak your feet in warm water (enough to cover your toe nails) to which a little chlorine bleach has been added. Do this twice a day. It also  helps to trim the nail as much as possible. The nail fungus may reappear and you may need to resume soaking, but it works.
