Nail Fungus Symptoms :

Onychomycosis, the medical term for nail fungus, is a living organism that thrives in dark, damp environments such as under and around nails. Fungal infections are very common on both fingernails and toenails. Toenails are more likely to be affected by fungus since it is attracted to a dark and damp environment which is more common on the foot than on the hand.

Up to 50% of people over the age of 50 have a nail fungus infection to some degree. Approximately 10% of worldwide population suffers from some sort of nail fungus.

The fungi that cause onychomycosis are related to those that cause ringworm, athlete's foot, and other common fungal infections. These fungi can also be confused with other conditions, such as psoriasis of the nails, nail ridges, and sometimes bacterial infections.  

Toe nail fungus is unsightly, disfiguring, embarrassing and can be painful. Nail fungus is not related to poor hygiene. It’s just a fact that our nails are located in a dark, warm, moist place where fungus can thrive - our socks and shoes.

It isn’t aging that causes toe nail fungus although there are a high percentage of older people inflected with a nail fungus. Over a life time there are more opportunities to acquire a fungal nail infection.    

For people with diabetes, circulation problems or a weakened immune system, nail fungus can present serious risks.  
Fungus nails must be aggressively dealt with or they can spread to all of your toe nails. The longer the infection is allowed to go unchecked, the more difficult it is to treat, and the more complications you have from it. 

This disease is commonly misunderstood and left untreated for various reasons. nail fungus, in particular, is notoriously difficult to treat. 

Nail fungus is usually a chronic condition that progresses to involve more of the nail and other toes. Even if you lose the affected nail,  the nail that grows back is usually also still affected by the fungus.

There are some internal medications available by prescription that help fight nailfungus, but they can have severe side effects such as upset stomach, headaches and liver damages.  Also mixing these drugs with other medications can be extremely dangerous. 

Not to mention the cost.  Some of the nail fungus prescription medications can cost well over $1000 by the time treatment is complete.  Studies show that there is only 35-50% complete cure rate after 72 weeks of using these prescription medications as a nail fungus cure. 

Most of the do-it-yourself home remedies are from common household items such as apple cider vinegar, Vicks Vaporub, hydrogen peroxide and tea tree oil. They are reviewed under the treatments section in this site, but are largely ineffective because they are very time consuming and most people found them extremely difficult to perform when they come as a regular task on a daily basis and for a long period of time.  

Surgery is also a treatment option as a nail fungus cure. The procedure is not difficult but the removal of the nail is permanent. When the nail grows back, it has a good chance of still having a fungus, if it grows back. This is a last resort and unnecessary.
